Therapeutic Roles of Active Ingredients
Montelukast Sodium (10 mg)
Montelukast is a selective leukotriene receptor antagonist. Leukotrienes are chemicals released by the body when allergens such as pollen are inhaled. These chemicals cause swelling in the lungs and tightening of airway muscles, leading to asthma symptoms.
Function: By blocking leukotrienes, Montelukast helps prevent airway narrowing, reduces lung inflammation, and improves asthma symptoms. It is also effective in treating seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis.
Levocetirizine Hydrochloride (5 mg)
Levocetirizine is a third-generation non-sedative antihistamine and the active enantiomer of cetirizine.
Function: It works by blocking histamine, the substance responsible for allergic symptoms. Unlike older antihistamines, levocetirizine is less likely to cross the blood-brain barrier, reducing drowsiness while effectively relieving sneezing, runny nose, and itchy or watery eyes.
Clinical Indications
Levitak-M is primarily indicated for the following conditions:
- Allergic Rhinitis: Effective for both seasonal (hay fever) and perennial allergies, relieving nasal congestion, sneezing, rhinorrhea, and post-nasal drip.
- Comorbid Asthma and Allergy: Commonly prescribed for patients with asthma along with allergic rhinitis, treating both upper and lower respiratory tracts.
- Chronic Urticaria: Helpful in managing chronic allergic skin rashes and hives.
Mechanism of Action: The Dual-Action Formula
The synergy between Montelukast and Levocetirizine is the core strength of Levitak-M.
While Levocetirizine controls the immediate hypersensitivity response by blocking H1 histamine receptors, Montelukast targets the late-phase inflammatory response
